@blackfreak13 Auto focus for photos? Yes. Auto focus for videos? No.

no autofocous ??
@radrocknroll1 I can’t say for sure, but I saw Nikon Canada say in a tweet that you can set bracketing manually, I presume via the menu system. How easy/fast that is, I can’t say. I’m ordering a D3100, so if you want to wait a bit (it won’t ship for a few weeks) I can look into it for you, but ultimately you may want to get some hands-on time with a D3100 to make sure it will do exactly what you want. I think the D3100 is better on most counts over the D5000 (I’m selling mine) .

@ThoughtsMedia: I was all happy and set to soon buy the D5000 as my first DSLR, till I found out yesterday about the D3100. The 3100 seems like a very nice improvement over the 5000, EXCEPT it won’t do bracketing, and my big thing is HDR. Whats your opinion as far as that goes? Can EV be changed quickly and steadily enough that the bracketing isnt a big deal, or do you think the 5000 would be the better choice? Thanks, and great videos!
@tetranumerikus Not quite – it goes 1/30th, 1/45th, then 1/60th, etc.
- Jason
Nice video! One question. Can you set the shutter to 1/48 in video mode? Thanks!
Skip to 1:40 for the start of the actual review of the camera and not a $30 scrap of plastic.
@mandykq18 I haven’t looked at the T1i, so I can’t say for sure. Go read the Popular Photography reviews of each camera.
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia which one would u say has better picrure and video quality, the nikon d5000 or the Canon EOS Rebel T1i 15.1 MP Digital SLR Camera?? i am debating within these two.
@mandykq18 Not in-camera: you’d need to create the panorama on a computer using the photos you have. The issue isn’t focusing on the tri-pod, it’s that if you’re on a tri-pod and you need to re-focus the camera, you can do so without jarring the camera – trying doing that hand-holding it; it’s not as easy. The D5000 would produce better quality photos than a D40. But don’t buy the D5000….wait for the Nikon D3100 which should be coming out in September (or sooner).
- Jason
i might be getting that camera for my birthday. can u take panorma pics with it?? and as for the video, r u saying that if u have a tripod holding the camera, the camera focuses better than holding it with ur hand?? also, how are the quality. i have the D40 right now, which quality is better for pictures??
@sinoperture If you can wait just a bit longer, maybe a month or so, Nikon is rumoured to be coming out with a replacement for the D3000, supposedly the D3100, and a replacement for the D90. Both are expected to be a big leap beyond the current versions with some great new technology (auto-focus tracking for videos for one). Photokina is in September, and that’s when they should be announced. Size-wise, the D3000 is indeed quite small – good for small hands. D90 is bigger + heavier.
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia No flash does have it’s place… it just gets a bad rap because it is not mastered very well – and yeah – it is hard to master. ANyway to the topic. I need to get one – so D3000 or D5000 or D90. I am leaning to either the 3000 or the 90 at this stage. 3000 is small. D90 can drive my screw lenses, wife will use – so small is good. I may use so screw motor is good. A D90 plus 35 1.8 does sound appealing. But then so does a D3000 and 35 1.8 and is small – for small hands..?
@sinoperture Oh, I just realized you’re the same guy from my Panasonic GF1 videos. I feel like we’ve been down this road before….
- Jason
@sinoperture You sound like you’re purely a film shooter, so you might not appreciate how truly bad high ISO (1600) photos can look on small digital sensors. It’s a matter of opinion of course, but they tend to look awful. Decent enough for a 4×6″ perhaps, but bigger? You’d notice the ugliness. It’s not “pretty” grain like film; it’s an ugly digital mess. I take objections to absolutist arguments that proclaim a photographer should “never” use/do something. Flash has its place.
- Jason
@ThoughtsMedia I loathe poor flash also. That is because people don’t know their zone system, never use spot or incident meters and rely on matrix metering. Apart from thinking they need more light than they do, they also fail to get great looking shots through the correct exposure in moody light or with some flash as well – in manual, inverse square rule style. 1600 is plenty enough sensitivity for dark shooting – with film without flash. Couldn’t imagine needing it with digital ever…
@sinoperture Flash is tool that a photographer can use for whatever he/she wishes; what you’re describing is called fill flash, and can help eliminate shadows on a face, but to say that flash “isn’t” for low light is, frankly, silly. If you’re in a dimly-lit room with a D5000, you’re going to want to use flash – it doesn’t have the high ISO performance to get away without it. I loathe the way flash photos look, but if it’s the only way to get a photo, so be it. Flash is just a tool.
- Jason
FYI Flash isn’t for low light – especially on camera flash. it is for use on super sunny days without cloud cover that disperses light. I use my flash more during the day than any other time. On to the camera – need to buy a digital one for the Missus’ photog course that for some reason doesn’t start with film. :-s So need a new camera as one of my F80′s wont do – looking at the D90 or D3000 – quality is the same for al really. But the swivel screen on this is interesting……..hmmmm
@LRCProductionsUS Yes, you’re right, I don’t tend to delve into the menus – I guess I’m so used to Nikon’s menu system (I’m on my fourth Nikon DSLR) that it’s mostly second nature to me and I don’t think of talking about it. Besides, that’s what dpreview is for.
- Jason
I love mine. I’m on my second music video shoot with it and it is awesome! I agree it’s not for parents to chase around doing video with the kids. For that I have the cybershot by sony (for my kids) but for planned video shots it has been working awesome for me. There are 2 videos on my page from it.
this review was a little physical – no menus discussed.
but thanks.
@monkeystar2307 I don’t how how tall you are, but for me, the D5000 is too small for me to grip it the same way I grip my D300. And when you’re holding the camera, carrying it around, you don’t constantly have your finger on the shutter release (at least I don’t). The D5000 is a perfect camera for little people, but for anyone six feet and over, it’s just a bit too small.
- Jason
The grip is only meant for 3 fingers because your index should be on the shutter release
@oddblob99 It’s a Nikkor 35mm prime DX lens.
- Jason
What lens is on that d5000?
Excellent Review!
Thanks!
